Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, Emmons is rendered selective by the addition of antimicrobial agents.

Sabouraud agar or Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) is a type of agar growth medium containing peptones. It is used to cultivate dermatophytes and other types of fungi, and can also grow filamentous bacteria such as Nocardia. It has utility for research and clinical care. It was created by, and is named after, Raymond Sabouraud in 1892. Oxoid Sabouraud Dextrose Agar may also be used as the basis of a Pagano-Levin medium 7 for the isolation of Candida albicans. 0.1g of triphenyltetrazolium chloride (as a filter sterilised solution) is added to each liter of autoclaved molten medium cooled to 55°C.

Other fungi, yeasts, and filamentous bacteria such as Nocardia can also grow in SDA. The acidic pH of this medium (pH about 5.0) inhibits the growth of bacteria but permits the growth of yeasts and most filamentous fungi. Sabouraud Dextrose Agar is a peptone medium supplemented with dextrose to support the growth of fungi. The peptones are sources of nitrogenous growth factors. Dextrose provides an energy source for the growth of microorganisms.
